What the book is about
Summary
R is a
young man with an existential crisis--he is a zombie. He shuffles through an
America destroyed by war, social collapse, and the mindless hunger of his undead
comrades, but he craves something more than blood and brains. He can speak just a few
grunted syllables, but his inner life is deep, full of wonder and longing. He
has no memories, no identity, and no pulse, but he has dreams.
After experiencing a teenage boy's memories while consuming his brain, R makes an unexpected choice that begins a tense, awkward, and strangely sweet relationship with the victim's human girlfriend. Julie is a blast of color in the otherwise dreary and gray landscape that surrounds R. His decision to protect her will transform not only R, but his fellow Dead, and perhaps their whole lifeless world.

So, we are way overdue
with this and we are sorry for that. We read the book early cause of it needing
to be back in the hands of the library since apparently everybody wants it now haha. I wonder why that is? Could it be
because of a certain movie ;) haha
Well, it’s here now and
forewarning we have a very vague
review for it. With the book not being here and it being quite a while since we
read it we just couldn’t get the words out for it, so I hope it is enough.
What do you
think of the world Isaac created? How do you like the new twist on the zombie
theme?
T: I like it. Having them see the memories of the person
they ate was a good twist. The world was developed well, and was perfect for a
zombie apocalypse.
How did you
like the zombie school?
T: It was interesting. But it does make sense. Someone
does have to teach the little ones how to kill.
If you
could gnaw on an author’s brain and consume their memories as these zombies
can, who’s would you want?
T: Any of the old timey greats would be okay with me. It’d
be cool to learn from them. Rick Riordan and Cinda Williams Chima are two of my
favorite authors so either one of them would be fine with me, too.
What do you
think of the Boneys? Have any ideas of what made them that way?
T: Love them. Zombies can’t be zombies forever. They have
to become something else. I have no clue what made them, but that’s fine with
me.
How did you
like their plan to get R into the stadium? Did you think it was funny how the guards
reacted to the zombies running away from them?
T: It was an interesting plan that worked. And the
confused guards were funny. I definitely would’ve reacted the same way.
How did you
like Nora’s reaction to R? Did you like it or did you wish it turned out
differently?
T: I wish she was a little more scared. I think she was
too calm and okay with it because of Julie.
Our thoughts:
~Plot~
The book was paced well, good mix of action and breathing
room from it, nothing was overly explained but you got the sense of what was
going on, and felt complete by the end of the book. Was entertaining, doesn’t feel
like it needs a sequel, has its humor, wasn’t perfect but didn’t have any huge
flaws that would turn me away from this book.
~Characters~
All the characters had their roles and they fit into them. R
was a great main character, Julie was a good female lead (asked question and wasn’t
okay with the whole situation at first), Nora was a good side kick but when she
first met R she was too calm and was accepting the zombie to easily even though
she’s trained to hate all of their kind, only befriended and trusted him cause
of Julie.
Overall, we would fully recommend this book. Read it for the
fun of it, for the new twist on zombies, for entertainment, and finally for the
movie. Which I, Ashley, happen to be very excited for. I’ll be going to see it Monday
with my amazing man! *squeal*
Now, sorry to say to those who were a fan of this feature, we will be stopping it for a while.
But with the time we had with it, it was fun!
